Prejudice & Discrimination

I watched a YouTube video about prejudice and discrimination, and it gave me a better idea of what the two things are and why they are different. The speaker explains that prejudice is pre-assumptions towards someone or something.

A stereotype is what leads to prejudice because you are associating something with another thing, then prejudice is believing in a stereotype. Stereotypes can be good or bad as explained in the video, relating to our first unit in Critical Thinking. He further explains that prejudice and stereotype lead to discrimination.

Discrimination is the action of offense towards a group of people. It is treating someone badly because of a previous negative assumption you have made of them. He also talks about implicit bias and shows how some policemen can use this in certain situations.

Implicit bias is non-conscious, leading us to act a certain way without actually knowing where our emotions were rooted. This video relates to the unit we did on stereotypes and the test we took to see if we were more biased towards certain groups. We explained in class that we unwillingly put people into groups without really noticing and we end up approaching things with different attitudes.

This could all lead to the concept of racism, which is a current issue in the world. It has always been an issue, but we hear the word a lot nowadays. I think this is because social media usually points fingers at people and people are always ready to accuse others. This makes people feel as if they are gaining validation because they are pointing out something negative in another person that they don't do. This video gave me a bigger idea of where our anger or fear towards certain people is rooted, and how we can act towards them. It also shows you where you can look if you want to change by realizing that you are assuming something about a certain category of people.

This video shows why people act a certain way, and why we have some problems in our society right now. It sums up a lot of what we learned in our first unit and teaches us about our emotions and how they are formed. This video was important to me and taught me about some concepts that I could have been confused about before.
