My Opinion On Assigned Books

I read an article from New York Times, from a woman named Tomi Adeyemi who says that high school ruined books for her. I think it is really fun to read and it really expands your imagination to get to experience different situations along with the authors in novels. But, her opinion is that it ruined many books for her because she simply was forced to read and I completely understand that. I think when you have to read something because you are going to have a test or quiz on it, you get it done just to ease the stress. However, you don't really pay attention to what is going on. Personally, the books I have to read in literature are pretty interesting. I like the books that the teachers choose because they teach different lessons and expand our cultural knowledge. But I also catch myself missing out on a lot of details that are really helpful. The idea of writing an essay on a book and having to take notes and make reading journals also really makes me lose any motivation to read. It is also really hard to keep up with, because I'm not a person who reads in their free time. I used to read a lot when I was in elementary school but I lost interest. Tomi said, "I want to make sure if I don't like what society has deemed a classic story, it's because I don't like the actual story, and not because I didn't understand it when I was 12." (Tamaki 1). I think this makes a lot of sense due to the fact that if we don't understand what is going on in a book (they can be hard to understand) we seem to think the book is bad. But she also mentioned that she would rather save the books for when she was older so she can re-read them and enjoy them more. I think there are many books that are good and everyone can write something and attract somebody to their writing, but they are not for everybody. In conclusion, I like the books I am assigned, and I like reading when I feel like it, but it isn't so much fun when you HAVE to do it.
